“It is for Georgia and Georgians to decide if they want to be members of the European Union or not. On our side, the issue has been very clear, Georgia, from our point of view, is a candidate country for EU membership. We are simply waiting for you,” said EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski.
According to Pawel Herczynski, It is up to Georgia to decide what relations it wants with what countries.
“It is for Georgians to decide who is your friend and who is your enemy. As the European Union, we are here for Georgia, we have always supported Georgia’s independence, Georgia sovereignty, Georgian territorial integrity, not only with words but also with deeds.
We have for 16 years now, our EU monitoring mission, doing everything possible in order to de-escalate and to find the solution to the issue of two occupied breakaway regions. We have been supporting the Georgian state independently of who was in the government with huge financial support. You have seen the figures. Our support to the Georgian government has been 10 times more than support to the civil society.
We have always used all our instruments, expertise, and training in order to strengthen Georgian institutions and Georgian democracy. And we are here to stay. It is for Georgia to decide who is Georgia’s friend and who is Georgia’s foe. We are fully at the disposal of Georgia and Georgian people and the Georgian government. We want Georgia to be a very successful country. And, we are patient. At the moment our relationship goes through a difficult period. I understand, there will be elections held in October. I sincerely hope that this difficult period will be over. Common sense will prevail. And it is for Georgia and Georgians to decide if they want to be members of the European Union or not. On our side, the issue has been very clear, Georgia, from our point of view, is a candidate country for EU membership. We are simply waiting for you,” he said.
