According to Eka Gvelesiani, founder of Hotel Paliani in Svaneti, while tourist numbers have increased this year, high-spending European and Asian visitors have disappeared, replaced largely by tourists from India, Pakistan, and Russia, who spend very little.
“Occupancy is up to 75%, but revenue is down by 40%,” Gvelesiani told Business Morning. “These guests often cook in their rooms and avoid restaurants. Our hotel’s restaurant has been closed for two years.”
She noted that the shift from quality tourism to low-budget tourism is harming the region. “Svaneti was built for European tourists who value culture and nature. The new tourist segment doesn’t understand or appreciate the heritage here.”
As a result, prices have dropped significantly amid increased competition and price dumping by new hotels.
“We should be moving toward quality tourism, not quantity. Instead, we’re attracting tourists who don't support the local economy.”
