Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the rehabilitation of the Tbilisi–Batumi railway will be completed by August, cutting travel time from 5.5 hours to 4 hours.
The Tbilisi–Akhaltsikhe line will also be restored, reducing travel time from 6 hours to 3 hours for the first time since the route’s suspension in 2009.
As part of the 2026–2028 development plan, Georgia Railway will purchase 50 new locomotives, 1,500 new carriages, and 10 new passenger trains, while introducing modern railway systems. The upgrades are expected to double operational capacity and increase annual passenger traffic from 2 million to 5 million, improving comfort and speed for both residents and tourists.
