Travel time by train between Tbilisi and Batumi has been reduced to four hours, marking another step in the modernization of Georgia’s railway system, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said. He noted that the journey previously took around five and a half hours and said the change would benefit both local passengers and tourists.
According to Kobakhidze, the reduced travel time is part of a broader package of reforms implemented in the railway sector over the past year. He said the upgrade of passenger rail services is only one element of the modernization process, with additional projects planned in the coming years.
The prime minister also highlighted developments in Georgia’s maritime infrastructure, saying cargo turnover at the Port of Batumi has reached a record level. Based on the first seven months of the year, he said 2026 is expected to become a record year for cargo volumes at the port.
Kobakhidze added that the government will continue developing the ports of Batumi and Poti while advancing construction of the Anaklia deep-sea port, where the first ships are expected to arrive in 2029. He also pledged continued support for the Batumi State Maritime Academy, describing it as an important institution for training seafarers and strengthening Georgia’s economy.
