“Tsetskhli Ainto”: New Plastic Rules Will Raise Prices by 20–30%

Georgia’s new plastic regulations are set to raise business costs and increase product prices by 20–30%. Giorgi Akhsabadze, co-founder of the barbecue chain “Tsetskhli Ainto,” told BM.GE that although their restaurants use minimal plastic, the stricter rules taking effect on July 1 will significantly increase operational expenses.

According to Akhsabadze, the new bans on plastic items - such as single-use containers, cups, and bottles - will force businesses to switch to alternative materials that are substantially more expensive. He expects this shift to directly impact consumer prices. Additional challenges stem from the company’s dependence on Georgian meat, where unstable supply and occasional shortages make it difficult to ensure consistent, high-quality production.

Despite the rising pressures, the company recorded strong growth in early 2026. Sales in the first quarter increased by 20–30% year-on-year across both existing branches. The chain currently operates in Vake and Saburtalo and plans to open three more locations this year, continuing expansion of its menu centered around traditional pork, beef, and chicken barbecue.

Georgia’s bans on plastic products are being phased in. As of April 1, items such as plastic cutlery, plates and food containers are prohibited from sale, while production and import will be banned from January 1, 2026. From July 1, 2026, food establishments will no longer be allowed to supply ready meals in plastic takeaway containers or provide drinks in plastic bottles.
