TSU, GTU, Iliauni… Which Faculties Will Remain at Georgia’s State Universities?

გივი მიქანაძე

According to Givi Mikanadze, Minister of Education, Science and Youth in the “Georgian Dream” government, student admission quotas at state universities will follow the “one city - one faculty” principle outlined in the higher education reform concept, taking into account each university’s traditional profile.

The planned distribution by the university is as follows:

  • Tbilisi State University (TSU): Exact and natural sciences; humanities (excluding pedagogy); law; economics and business administration; social and political sciences.
  • Georgian Technical University (GTU): Engineering and technical disciplines.
  • Tbilisi State Medical University: Medical specialties.
  • Ilia State University: Pedagogy programs; STEM specialties with ABET accreditation.
  • Sukhumi State University: Agricultural specialties; Georgian-Abkhazian language and literature; pedagogy.
  • Arts and Sports Universities: Specialized programs according to their profile.
  • Batumi and Kutaisi universities: Multifunctional programs.
  • Zugdidi, Gori, Akhaltsikhe, and Telavi universities: Agricultural specialties, tourism, and pedagogy.

Mikanadze emphasized that a labor market analysis conducted by the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, in consultation with the Ministry of Education and the private sector, revealed significant challenges.

“The results of the labor market survey are more concerning than they may appear at first glance. Overall, student enrollment over the past years has not met labor market needs, leaving many graduates unable to fully utilize the specialty and diploma they earned,” Mikanadze noted.
