Tunnel excavation on the 4.5-km Stepantsminda–Gveleti road section has been completed, the Ministry of Infrastructure announced. The Minister of Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze, Minister of Regional Development Kakhaber Guledani, and Armenia’s Minister of Infrastructure Davit Khudatiani visited the site to inspect ongoing works.
The project provides the construction of a two-lane road, two tunnels, and two bridges. With one tunnel already fully cut, work is now underway on the foundations and abutments of both bridges. Notably, the project includes what will become the longest bridge in Georgia, an engineering structure exceeding two kilometers in length, requiring advanced technical solutions.
Stepantsminda–Gveleti road is part of the E117 international route and the North–South corridor. Upgrading this segment to modern safety standards is expected to significantly improve year-round traffic safety and strengthen both Georgia’s and the region’s transit and economic capacity.
GEL 215.5 million project is being implemented by the Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure. Construction is carried out by China Railway Tunnel Group Co., which was awarded the contract in July 2024. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027.
