Architect and urbanist Ana Bibilashvili says expanding tram services is essential to easing Tbilisi’s traffic congestion. She described the planned Didube–Didi Dighomi tram line as particularly important given the area’s population density and role as a major transport hub.

Bibilashvili said the project must be carefully planned to prevent construction from creating additional chaos in the city. She stressed that the corridor is difficult to replace with alternative routes and that disruptions should therefore be minimized during construction.

According to the urbanist, tram transport is the most effective solution for a city as dense as Tbilisi because it can carry large numbers of passengers within a limited period. She said the rapid growth of Didi Dighomi has created demand that other forms of public transport cannot adequately handle.

Bibilashvili also argued that tram lines should eventually be extended to other parts of Tbilisi. The current project is being implemented by Turkish joint venture EYE under a GEL 287 million contract with the Tbilisi Transport Company.
