Georgia plans to build the 32-kilometer Badiuri-Bakurtsikhe highway and a new 36.6-kilometer Gurjaani-Telavi road with $315 million in financing from the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
The project includes the construction of two four-lane sections on the Tbilisi-Bakurtsikhe-Lagodekhi (S5) highway: the 21.7-kilometer Badiuri-Chalaubani segment and the 9.1-kilometer Chalaubani-Bakurtsikhe segment, totaling about 32 kilometers.
The financing package also covers the construction of a new road linking Gurjaani and Telavi, as well as access roads needed to connect the new highway infrastructure with existing road networks and nearby settlements.
The new projects will extend the ongoing modernization of Kakheti’s transport corridor. A 17-kilometer Sagarejo-Badiuri section is scheduled for completion in 2026, while new highway sections totaling 53 kilometers were opened in 2024 as part of the broader upgrade of the region’s road network.
