“Vakijvari Trout Farm”, located in Georgia’s Guria region, has announced plans to modernize its production facilities and introduce new technologies aimed at increasing output and improving product quality.
According to Erekle Chkhartishvili, the farm’s sales manager, the project’s total investment amounts to approximately GEL 2 million.
“We are expanding through new technologies, installing oxygenation systems, closed-water circulation units, and other modern methods that will allow us to produce more fish in a smaller area. We’re not expanding our area; we’re advancing technologically,” Chkhartishvili told BM.GE.
He added that the technical plan for the project was developed in cooperation with Israeli specialists. Following the investment, the enterprise expects to produce around 400 tons of trout annually, with the potential to increase production up to 1,000 tons under favorable conditions.
Currently, “Vakijvari Trout Farm” partners with “Nikora,” one of Georgia’s largest food retail and processing networks. Chkhartishvili noted that sales volumes are growing annually, although domestic producers continue to face challenges in competing with imported fish from Turkey.
“The Georgian market is dominated by Turkish fish, which makes competition tough. However, we’re focused on strengthening our position through quality and technological advancement,” he said.
“Vakijvari Trout Farm”, established during the Soviet era, originally operated with three ponds. About 18 years ago, the facility was acquired by Nikora, which doubled its capacity. Today, the farm produces trout and caviar, supplied primarily to local markets, chain stores, and supermarkets across Georgia.
