Varlam (Vako) Avaliani has been appointed as Georgia’s new Ambassador to Qatar, according to a decree signed by Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
Avaliani’s nomination was formally presented to Foreign Minister Ilia Davarashvili for approval.
Before his diplomatic appointment, Avaliani served as Director of Rustavi 2 and Primetime Holding, a position he left on June 10, 2025. He became head of Rustavi 2 in 2021 after previously serving as Executive Director of Maestro TV, a post he left in 2019, citing disagreements over the channel’s editorial direction following the return of Gia Gachechiladze ("Utsnobi").
Earlier in his career, Avaliani held senior roles in Georgia’s Ministry of Defense, serving as Advisor to the Minister (2012–2014) and later as Deputy Minister of Defense.
