Vocational Education Will Become Mandatory For Schools - Minister

Georgian Education Minister Giorgi Amilakhvari on Tuesday said all vocational education programmes across the country would be updated and revised to offer a “completely new concept” with mandatory modules for general education.

In a presentation of the new vision, Amilakhvari said the programmes and qualifications would be updated and revised and about 20 new qualifications created in accordance with “modern international standards” within a two-years period.

He said priorities of professional education would also be refreshed “in accordance with the needs of the labour market”, and added the Ministry intended to switch to a new financing model that would be “cost-effective and based on achievements” within trends of economic development from 2025.

The introduction of a “completely new concept” for schools involves several areas of compulsory modules to for the purpose of overhauling the sector, he noted.

Students in 10th-12th grades will have the opportunity to acquire vocational education in addition to the general education courses and find employment in the labour market, the Minister explained.

Amilakhvari said the Ministry would select the “first largest, strongest pilot schools” for the model starting from 2024, aiming to eventually equip all 2,100 schools with updated programmes, qualifications, new priorities and the new funding model.
