The United States has condemned the use of excessive force by Georgian police against protesters and expressed deep concern over reports of arrests and attacks on journalists. Vedant Patel, deputy spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, made the statement, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values.

“We strongly condemn the excessive use of force by police in Georgia against protesters exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and expression, including the right to peaceful protest,” Patel stated.

He highlighted the U.S.’s concern about reports of journalists being arrested or attacked, stressing that a free press is fundamental to democracy.

The U.S. called on all sides to ensure peaceful protests and urged the Georgian government to adhere strictly to the rule of law, respect human rights, and protect fundamental freedoms.

Patel added, “We are focused on is engaging with the Georgian government and emphasizing to them a strong responsibility they have to respect the rule of law, human rights and respect fundamental freedoms which we continue to believe are foundations of Georgia’s aspirations.”
