The issue of offering compulsory COVID-19 insurance for tourists was raised by tour operators during a meeting with the Minister of Economy last week.
As the private sector declares, tour operators have questions about the issue and they are waiting for the government’s answer.
As they say, the main problem is the lack of COVID-insurance packages in the country, which is a kind of obstacle in the case of both outbound and inbound tourism.
Nino Kekelidze, the founder of the travel company DISCOVER GEORGIA asks, what happens if a tourist becomes infected in Georgia and does not have the funds for treatment.
"There is a lot of ambiguity in the case of inbound tourism. For example, a tourist arrived in Georgia and he does not have COIVD-insurance. Tour operators even sign a contract that includes a clause that obliges them to pay for treatment if they become infected in the country, but what if they do not have the appropriate funds? We all know that treatment requires quite large sums of money. This is already a big question mark. We raised this issue at the meeting with the Minister of Economy and we are waiting for an answer in the near future, "said Nino Kekelidze, the founder of DISCOVER GEORGIA.
