Davit Narmania, chairman of GNERC, says that when the tariffs for electricity supply companies were determined in 2020, the commission set a lower tariff than the companies requested.
As he told BMGTV, now the exchange rate of GEL is stable against the USD, but if the commission changes the rate, it will still have to change in the direction of growth at the end of the year.
"In 2020, the electricity supply companies had even more expectations in the direction of tariff increases, although the Commission did not accept their offer. If we had taken into account their request, the electricity tariff would have increased by two tetri, however, as I told you, the commission "squeezed" the companies' expenditures well.
After that, the exchange rate of lari increased even more, and exceeded even 3.40 tetri against the USD, but then it began to decline. If the regulatory commission reduces the tariff now and the exchange rate worsens, we will have to increase the electricity tariff again at the end of December. Therefore, the Commission refrains from taking this step. If the exchange rate of GEL goes down, someday we will review these tariffs, and this "someday" will not be for long," says Narmania.
