Tbilisi Central remains ready to reconstruct the commercial space at the site of the so-called Borjomi Railway Station, which was destroyed by fire, but the company is awaiting a decision from the municipality. According to Tbilisi Central Executive Director Levan Karalashvili, the City Hall is developing a new road project connecting the area to Station Square, which is expected to pass through part of the Borjomi Station site. “We are waiting to see what configuration of the site will actually remain and how commercially attractive it will be to develop. After that, we will work on the new project in greater detail and make a corresponding decision,” Karalashvili said.

The so-called Borjomi Station, located at Station Square, was destroyed by a fire in April last year. The blaze destroyed 12,000 square meters of commercial and warehouse space. Tbilisi Central holds the site under a 49-year long-term lease from Georgian Railway. The company announced shortly after the fire that it was ready to prepare a reconstruction project for the commercial space as soon as possible.

“We have been negotiating with the municipality on this issue for more than a year. I want to reiterate that we are ready to invest, restore the commercial spaces there and develop them in a more modern format. However, the municipality introduced a project for a so-called connecting bridge, which is currently being developed,” Karalashvili said.

According to him, the planned infrastructure significantly changes the configuration and total area of the site. “We are waiting to see what configuration of the site will actually remain and how commercially attractive it will be to develop. After that, we will work on the new project in greater detail and make a corresponding decision. I hope everything will become clear by the end of the year and we will have a clearer picture,” he said.
