During an operational meeting at Yerevan City Hall on October 7, it was announced that significant changes are coming to the payment system of the capital's metro.
According to Babken Sedrakyan, Acting Director of Yerevan Metro, by the end of this month, the use of tokens at metro stations will be completely phased out. Instead, a unified payment system will be introduced.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the construction of a new metro station. It was revealed that on October 1, a revised project and cost documentation package was submitted to City Hall.
Alongside changes in the metro, Yerevan is preparing for a broader reform of the city’s entire transport system. Previously, City Hall representatives announced plans to raise transit fares starting in 2025. Preparatory steps for these changes were reviewed during the October 7 meeting.
Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan stated that a phased transition to a unified ticketing system for buses will begin on November 1. He instructed relevant officials to start working on this initiative.
Plans for the acquisition of 250 electric buses were also discussed. It is expected that the procurement project will be included in the agenda by the end of the year. Interestingly, experts estimate that only 150 new buses will be sufficient to establish a fully functional city transport network.
