On 3 May 2018, the state commission of the Lithuanian language made a historic decision by changing the official name of Georgia in the Lithuanian language from Gruzija to Sakartvelo.
The decision by the Lithuanian government to change the official Lithuanian term for Georgia marks the 100th anniversary of the First Republic of Georgia.
The Georgian embassy to Georgia has placed a new sign on its premises reading ‘Sakartvelo Ambasada’ - Embassy of Georgia in Lithuanian.
The presentation ceremony of the new sign was attended by Georgian students from Lithuanian universities. It was given broad coverage by the Lithuanian media. Georgian Ambassador to Lithuania Khatuna Salukvadze gave an interview to the Lithuanian public broadcaster.
