Georgia-Japan Trade Turnover Increased To USD 322 MLN In 2022

Georgia-Japan trade turnover amounted to USD 322 million 127 thousand in 2022, which was 56.6% more than the data of 2021. According to official statistics, trade ties with Japan were reduced during the pandemic, but they became more active in 2022. During the reporting period, the trade turnover increased mainly at the expense of imports.

Last year, exports had a small 4.6% share in trade with Japan. During this period, Georgia earned USD 15 million from the sale of goods in Japan, which was 20.8% less than the exports of 2021.

TOP-5 Major Exporting Commodities:

1. Raw aluminum - USD 5.9 million, 2 574 tons;
2. Waste and scrap of precious metals - USD 5.2 million, 11 tons;
3. Natural grape wines - USD 1.3 million, 245 tons;
4. Copper waste and scrap - USD 647 thousand, 87 tons;
5. Rubber pneumatic tires - USd 440 thousand, 42 tons;

As for imports, they occupy a large share in the trade relations between Georgia and Japan. Last year, USD 307 million were spent in Japan to purchase goods of various items. Imports increased by 64.5% compared to 2021. This growth is mainly explained by the increase in the imports of the largest goods. Last year, the imports of passenger cars accounted for 92% of the total imports from Japan. And compared to 2021, the rate of imports of goods increased by 68.5%.

1. Passenger cars - USD 282.7 million;
2. New rubber pneumatic tires - USD 4.8 million, 949 tons;
3. Rubber pneumatic tires, restored or used - USD 3.1 million, 2 274 tons;
4. Trucks - USD 2.1 million;
5. Parts of used cars - USD 2 million, 1 150 tons;
6. Isotopes, except for isotopes of 2844 commodity positions - USD 1.2 million, 4 tons;
7. Printing equipment, including ink-jet printing machines - USD 1.1 million, 59 tons;
8. Automobiles designed to transport 10 people or more - USD 1.1 million ;
9. Equipment based on the use of X-ray alpha-, beta- or gamma radiation - USD 993 thousand, 44 tons;
10. Tractors - USD 899 thousand.
