The head of the critical medicine department of "New Hospitals" says that setting a minimum salary for doctors and nurses will neither improve the condition of the medical personnel nor stop their outflow.

According to him, a decent salary for medical personnel is determined by economic growth, not a bureaucratic decision.

"The minimum wage is part of the regulatory spiral by the Ministry of Health, which the road to hell paved with good intention. A good economic situation should set real and decent wages for medical staff in hospitals and in general. Imposing an artificial minimum wage will not be a real benefit to our doctors and nurses. In addition, this will not achieve the goal announced by the Ministry of Health to reduce the outflow of personnel from Georgia.

The solution lies in real economic growth, optimal distribution of costs, increased competition, involvement of insurance companies, and not in bureaucratic decisions,” said Vakhtang Kalyan to BMG.

From January 1, 2023, according to the government's decree, the minimum salary of doctors was set at GEL 1,260, while for nurses - at GEL 792.
