3 Reasons Why Electricity Tariffs Will Remain Unchanged for Three Months – GNERC

სემეკი

Georgia’s energy and water regulator, GNERC, announced that electricity tariffs will remain unchanged for the next three months, with no increase coming into effect from January 1, 2026.

GNERC Chairman David Narmania explained that the decision to temporarily extend current tariffs was based on three main factors:

First, electricity distribution companies formally requested a three-month postponement of tariff adjustments. Second, the exact electricity balances and projected generation for the upcoming year have not yet been fully finalized, making precise calculations difficult at this stage. Third, the decision followed intensive consultations with the Prime Minister’s office, since generation forecasts and hydroelectric deregulation fall under the government’s prerogatives.

Additionally, GNERC received a notification from Energo-Pro Georgia, which has a previously agreed 1.5 billion GEL investment plan, indicating that the company might slightly adjust its plan. This investment had been a key factor for a potential tariff increase, but the uncertainty contributed to the three-month extension.

Narmania emphasized that the temporary extension allows GNERC to accurately incorporate updated generation volumes and any investment adjustments into future tariff calculations. The consumer tariff consists of two components: the distribution tariff and the direct energy tariff. Maintaining the current rates ensures that these calculations are based on precise data and reflects any potential revisions from energy companies before new tariffs are established.
