The historic U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska ended without concrete results. The three-hour meeting, held in a three-on-three format, concluded without the American and Russian presidents making any statement about a specific agreement at their joint press conference.U.S. President Donald Trump opened his remarks to the media by thanking President Putin.
He described the meeting with his Russian counterpart as quite productive and stressed that Putin was genuinely interested in ending the war.“We achieved very significant progress on the path of negotiations. True, we haven’t reached full agreement yet, but the meeting was very fruitful. On many issues, we have already aligned our positions. It can be said that we haven’t reached the final stage, but there is a strong chance we will get there soon,” Trump stated.Of particular note were Trump’s remarks on Ukraine. According to him, the war-torn country should agree to the proposal that Secretary of State Rubio, Special Representative Witkoff, and other members of the Trump administration had discussed with Putin.
Trump, however, did not specify what the agreement entails.Toward the end of his speech, the American president announced that he intends to immediately speak with NATO member states and the president of Ukraine to brief them on the details of the summit.“I’ll be calling NATO members shortly—probably only those I consider necessary. Of course, I’ll also speak with Volodymyr Zelensky and pass on the information about today’s meeting. The final decision must be made by them,” Trump noted. The presidents wrapped up the press conference without taking questions from the media.
Trump also remarked that he had always had a “fantastic relationship” with Putin, though investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections had hindered that relationship. Putin, for his part, said the talks were conducted “in a respectful and constructive atmosphere” and that this was a long-awaited meeting.
