On Monday, June 10, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan met with the Georgian Ambassador to Armenia Giorgi Sharvashidze, as reported by the President's press service.
President Khachaturyan emphasized the significance of the friendly relations between Armenia and Georgia, noting that the ties between the two countries have been growing stronger in recent years. He expressed satisfaction with the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership in January of this year, which marks a new level of interaction at the state level. Khachaturyan highlighted the importance of continuing cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and other areas.
“Today we witness our Georgian friends and partners working hand in hand with us to recover from the natural disaster that occurred in the Tavush and Lori regions. Our relationships have been built through such episodes and continue to develop in the same way.
The friendly ties are strengthening every year, and I am pleased that the Joint Declaration on the Establishment of a Strategic Partnership was signed between our countries in January of this year. This signifies that we have reached a new level of relations at the state level, and in this context, our joint cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and other spheres will continue,” said President Khachaturyan.
Georgian Ambassador to Armenia Giorgi Sharvashidze noted that the brotherhood between the two countries has reached the level of strategic partnership following the signing of the Joint Declaration in January. Sharvashidze also expressed gratitude to the Armenian government for its vote on June 4 at the UN General Assembly for the resolution on the right of return for all displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.
During the meeting, the parties discussed issues on the cooperation agenda between the neighboring countries. Special attention was given to events dedicated to the anniversaries of Sergei Parajanov and Charles Aznavour in Armenia and Georgia. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the ongoing growth of mutual trade and tourism visits between the two countries and highly valued the periodic reciprocal visits at the highest political level.
BMG reports that trade turnover between Armenia and Georgia in January-April 2024 amounted to over $80 million, which is 6.5% less compared to the same period last year. At the same time, exports of Armenian goods to Georgia decreased by 11.4%, reaching $45.6 million. In contrast, imports from Georgia to Armenia increased by 1%, amounting to $34.5 million.
