In an interview with ISNA news agency, Armenia’s Ambassador to Iran, Arsen Avagyan, outlined the current state and future prospects of Armenian-Iranian relations. The diplomat emphasized the importance of deepening ties with Iran for Armenia, noting that this focus is embedded in the Armenian government's 2021-2026 program.
A key highlight of the interview was Avagyan's statement on Armenia's role as a natural bridge between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). According to the ambassador, Armenia’s geographic location presents unique opportunities for Iran to access the EAEU market. This is supported by the recent signing of a free trade agreement between the EAEU and Iran, as well as Iran’s active participation in the Eurasian Economic Forum held in Yerevan.
In terms of economic cooperation, Avagyan highlighted several key projects. Among them are the implementation of the North-South Transport Corridor, the modernization of the Meghri border checkpoint, and the expansion of energy cooperation. Special attention is being paid to the extension of the “Gas for Electricity” program and the construction of the third high-voltage transmission line between Iran and Armenia.
Speaking on regional stability, the ambassador reiterated that Armenia rejects the idea of an extraterritorial corridor through its territory. However, Armenia is ready to ensure the safe transit of goods and people across its land. Avagyan also noted support for the "Crossroads of the World" project, aimed at unblocking regional communications.
Avagyan particularly emphasized Iran’s support for Armenia’s territorial integrity and stressed the importance of a constructive approach by all regional players in establishing long-term peace.
In conclusion, the ambassador expressed hope for the early signing of a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, noting that most of the document has already been agreed upon by both sides. In his view, this would be a significant step towards stabilizing the region and opening new opportunities for economic cooperation, particularly in the context of Armenia's role as a link between Iran and the EAEU.
