On May 23, Chairman of the State Revenue Committee (SRC) Rustam Badasyan met with the European Union Ambassador to Armenia Vassilis Maragos and his delegation at the Margara checkpoint, located on the border with Turkey.
According to the SRC press service, the committee head and the EU ambassador conducted a joint tour of the checkpoint, showcasing its entire infrastructure, application procedures, and organizational processes.
Special attention was given to the fact that, like at other border checkpoints in Armenia, state border control at the Margara customs point is planned to be carried out based on the principle of integrated border management using a "one-stop-shop" system.
The main construction work at the checkpoint was completed in a short period — about six months — and the major renovation has been fully finished. The project included the construction of a convenient service hall, an inspection hangar, pavilions and warehouses for cargo processing, parking lots, a well-equipped spacious area, and other infrastructure meeting international standards and equipped with modern technical facilities.
Earlier, it was reported that the border infrastructure development was part of efforts to normalize Armenia's relations with Turkey, aimed at opening the border between the two countries and restoring diplomatic relations.
Turkey's special representative in negotiations on normalizing relations between Armenia and Turkey Serdar Kilic stated in January 2023 that Armenia and Turkey had agreed to give new impetus to efforts to open the border for third-country nationals. However, the border remains closed.
