Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan announced that discussions are underway in the country regarding the possibility of starting the process of joining the European Union. This statement was made on September 9 during a meeting with European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas.
According to Pashinyan, Armenia is effectively expanding its agenda in relations with the EU. Especially after his speech in the European Parliament last year, the question of possible EU membership has become part of Armenia's political agenda. "This is not a simple matter, but it requires detailed and comprehensive consideration. It will be important to hear the opinions and advice of our EU partners," the Prime Minister noted.
Pashinyan expressed satisfaction with the progress in relations with the EU, mentioning the start of negotiations on visa liberalization and the decision to support Armenia through the European Peace Facility. He also highlighted the importance of the EU Civilian Mission's activities in Armenia in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
For his part, Margaritis Schinas emphasized the EU's interest in developing relations with Armenia and supporting the promotion of reforms in the country. The Vice President of the European Commission also expressed hope for effective cooperation with the Armenian government in the context of the visa liberalization dialogue.
The decision to start negotiations with Armenia on visa liberalization was approved by the ambassadors of all EU member states on July 17. This followed a period of intensive talks between Yerevan and Brussels, demonstrating the growing mutual interest in strengthening relations.
It is also worth noting that alongside the decision to initiate the visa dialogue, the EU’s Peace Facility approved the provision of defense assistance to Armenia.
