On August 29, during a government meeting, Armenia made decisions regarding the commercial fishing of whitefish in Lake Sevan. The authorities reviewed the previously established quotas and the fishing period for this valuable fish.
Initially, a quota of 257 tons of whitefish was set from March 1, with plans to meet this limit by September 1. However, current reports indicate that the fishing volume has nearly reached this limit, with 256.95 tons already caught under nine existing contracts.
In response, the government conducted a study and assessment of the lake's fish stocks. Based on the findings, it was decided to increase the quota by an additional 422 tons. The new commercial fishing period is set from September 1 to November 15 of this year.
Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia and one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. Situated at an elevation of about 1900 meters above sea level, it covers an area of over 1200 square kilometers in the central part of the country. Sevan is a crucial natural and cultural asset for Armenia, playing a key role in the nation's economy, ecology, and identity.
