Ararat Mirzoyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, and Gert Jan Koopman, the Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, held a meeting on April 30, during which they discussed a number of key issues within the framework of the partnership between Armenia and the European Union.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, the discussion touched upon the effective implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between Armenia and the EU, as well as prospects for cooperation in new areas.
Special attention was paid to the results of the trilateral high-level meeting held on April 5 in Brussels, as well as to strengthening the resilience and diversification of Armenia's economy. Regional programs were also discussed, including those aimed at ensuring economic development in the South Caucasus.
Minister Mirzoyan emphasized the importance of unlocking transport communications in the region and expressed hope for support for the "Crossroad of Peace" initiative developed by the Government of Armenia.
Earlier, BMG wrote about the growing economic role of Russia in Armenia after 2022, which, according to the World Bank, reduces the level of the country's economic diversification.
Armenia's foreign trade turnover for January-March 2024 increased by 2.1 times, reaching $9.1 billion. Exports grew faster, increasing by 2.7 times to reach $4.4 billion, while imports rose by 75.8%, reaching $4.7 billion.
The sharp rise in economic activity is largely driven by the high dynamics in the industrial sector, which is explained by the re-export of Russian gold and precious stones from Armenia to the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.
