On September 4th, the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs of the National Assembly of Armenia held a first reading of the draft law on the ratification of the Framework Agreement on the Establishment of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia, Hakob Vardanyan, presented the details of this legislative initiative. The ISA, established in 2020, originates from the Paris Declaration adopted at the UN Climate Change Conference on November 30, 2015.

According to the National Assembly's press service, to date, 118 countries have signed the agreement to establish the ISA, with 97 of them having already ratified it. Armenia joined the alliance by signing the corresponding document in November 2023.

The primary goal of the agreement is to unite the efforts of member countries in developing solar energy. This is planned to be achieved through the harmonization of technologies, stimulation of innovation, attraction of financing, and removal of existing barriers. The ultimate goal is to ensure the well-being, energy security, and sustainable development of the people.

Hakob Vardanyan emphasized that Armenia's participation in the alliance would be highly beneficial for the country. He also highlighted Armenia's significant progress in solar energy, noting that as of September 1st, solar power plants with a total capacity of 630 MW are already operational in the country.

The draft law on the ratification of the agreement received a positive conclusion from the committee, paving the way for further consideration and potential adoption of the document.
