Active efforts are underway in Armenia to resume construction of the Kaps Reservoir in the Shirak region, which was interrupted by the 1988 earthquake.
This large-scale project was discussed during a meeting between Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Vache Terteryan, and a delegation from the German KfW Bank on October 21.
The project is being financed through a loan from KfW and co-financing from the Armenian government. The total budget amounts to an impressive €95.2 million, of which €68.5 million are loan funds.
According to the plan, the reservoir will have a maximum capacity of up to 60 million cubic meters of water. In the first phase of construction, a reservoir with a capacity of 25 million cubic meters is planned.
The implementation of the project will significantly increase the area of irrigated land in the region. It is expected that more than 8,880 hectares will switch from mechanical to gravity irrigation, resulting in substantial energy savings of up to 12.3 million kilowatt-hours per year.
The construction work is being carried out by the Chinese company Shanxi Construction Investment Group, highlighting the international nature of the project.
