Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan held a meeting with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with the organization in implementing democratic reforms in the country. This was reported by the press service of the Armenian government.
Pashinyan highlighted the strategic significance of advancing democracy for the Armenian government and reaffirmed the country’s intention to consistently continue taking steps in this direction. In turn, Alain Berset expressed the Council of Europe’s readiness to expand cooperation with Armenia to effectively carry out institutional reforms.
Special attention during the meeting was given to discussing the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Pashinyan reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to the peace agenda, stating the country’s readiness to sign an agreement based on the agreed articles and to continue further discussions.
The Prime Minister also touched upon the constitutional aspects of the peace agreement. He noted that according to Armenia’s Constitution, ratified international treaties take precedence over national legislation.
Pashinyan emphasized that the agreed text of the peace treaty includes a provision stipulating that neither party can invoke its domestic legislation as a justification for failing to comply with the provisions of the international treaty.
