The Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan has called on students to participate in volunteer work in the settlements declared disaster zones in the Lori and Tavush provinces of the country.
"In the settlements affected by the flooding, there is a need for volunteer work. Many of you, from various universities, are already on-site supporting the ongoing efforts. New groups of students will arrive tomorrow. I am confident that others will join this important work in the coming days," said the minister in her statement.
The need for volunteer assistance in the disaster zones of Lori and Tavush provinces was highlighted in a statement by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Gnel Sanosyan.
According to Sanosyan, about 50 volunteers were mobilized yesterday, and today the plan is to increase the number to 200. "I think in the next few days, we will need 200-300 volunteers daily," Sanosyan said.
Earlier, BMG reported that the Armenian government declared several settlements in the Lori and Tavush provinces as disaster zones following severe floods caused by heavy rains on May 25-26, 2024.
As a result of the natural disaster, four people lost their lives, 18 bridges were destroyed, and seven settlements were cut off from the rest of the region. To address the urgent needs of the local population, 300 million drams (approximately $800,000) have already been allocated.
