Between January and October 2024, Armenian citizens made approximately 1.445 million trips abroad, an increase of 75,800 compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Armenian Tourism Committee via BMG.

Official statistics reveal that the majority of outbound travel occurred through two key checkpoints: Zvartnots International Airport, with 586,600 departures, and the Bagratashen land border crossing, used by 546,000 travelers. Significant traffic was also recorded at Meghri (145,000 travelers) on the Iranian border and Bavra (114,900 travelers) on the Georgian border. Other checkpoints, including Gyumri Airport, saw considerably fewer travelers.

A notable gender disparity emerged among travelers: 837,500 were men, while approximately 608,000 were women.

Georgia remains the most popular destination for Armenian travelers, with many opting for self-driven trips. According to the Georgian National Tourism Administration, 732,200 Armenian tourists visited Georgia in the first nine months of 2024, a slight 0.5% decrease from the previous year. Armenia ranks third among tourist source countries for Georgia, following Russia (1.11 million tourists) and Turkey (1.06 million tourists). Georgia saw a total of 3.99 million international visitors during the same period, up 9.2% year-on-year.

Egypt is the second-most favored destination, attracting Armenian tourists with its relatively affordable options despite rising prices this year. Resorts like Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada are perennial favorites, with new destinations such as Oman and Cairo also gaining popularity. Experts estimate around 150,000 Armenians visit Egypt annually.

Greece also remains a popular choice, with Cyprus experiencing a surge in interest over the last two years. “European destinations, especially coastal regions of Italy and France, are highly sought after, reflecting Armenians’ preference for beach holidays,” said Mekhak Apresyan, head of the Armenian Tourism Federation, in an interview with BMG.

Travel industry experts have noted a shift in booking behavior: unlike previous years, when early reservations began in spring, there has been a marked decline in advance bookings. Travelers are waiting for potential price drops, though experts warn such reductions are unlikely.
