Birth rate decreases and mortality increases in Armenia

According to the National Statistical Committee of Armenia, the birth rate in the country decreased by 8.1% from January to May 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

During the first five months of this year, 13,122 children were born, whereas 14,273 newborns were registered in the same period last year.

At the same time, the number of stillbirths increased. During this period, 189 cases of stillbirth were registered, which is 11.8% higher compared to the same period last year.

BMG has already reported that the overall mortality in the country for the first five months of 2024 was 11,297 people, which is 5.5% higher than the figures for the same period in 2023.

As a result, the vitality index, showing the ratio of births to deaths, decreased to 116.2% from January to May 2024 compared to 133.3% for the first five months of 2023.
