Armenia is experiencing an alarming demographic trend: in the first nine months of 2024, the mortality rate increased by 5.4%, while the birth rate dropped by 7.2%.
According to data from Armenia's Statistical Committee, 19,100 people passed away in the country from January to September.
The primary cause of death remains circulatory system diseases, which accounted for 10,132 deaths (53.1% of total deaths). This figure is 6.1% higher than in the same period last year. Neoplasms ranked second, claiming 3,937 lives (20.6%). Mortality from infectious diseases also saw a significant increase of 67%.
Amid rising mortality, the birth rate has continued its decline, a trend that began in January this year. During the reporting period, 24,997 children were born, nearly two thousand fewer than in the previous year. Particularly concerning is the 5.4% increase in stillbirth cases.
As a result, the natural population growth in Armenia amounted to just 5,897 people, a third less than the figure for the same period in 2023.
