Georgian Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili has described the application of visa suspension measures to diplomatic passport holders as “unusual,” speaking to journalists on recent EU-related decisions.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Bochorishvili said that the implementation of visa suspension mechanisms in relation to visa-free travel is taking an “unusual form” and raises additional questions, particularly as it affects holders of diplomatic passports, individuals who typically enjoy facilitated travel arrangements under international practice.
She emphasized that diplomatic passport holders are generally expected to benefit from privileges aimed at enabling dialogue and resolving complex international issues. In her words, extending restrictive measures to this category is not consistent with standard diplomatic norms.
Bochorishvili also noted that Georgia continues dialogue with the European Commission and is actively working on all related issues, including recent decisions affecting diplomatic passport holders. She said initial meetings have already taken place and further discussions on visa-related matters will continue.
