Georgia’s container turnover is projected to surpass 700,000 units by the end of 2025, reflecting sustained growth across the country’s maritime infrastructure. The update was delivered by Minister of Economy Mariam Kvrivishvili during her address at the 34th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where she emphasized that Georgian ports continue to operate “stably and efficiently” amid rising demand.

Kvrivishvili also highlighted the strengthening role of the Middle Corridor, noting that the route has rapidly evolved into a reliable and increasingly important trade link between Europe and Asia. According to her, Georgia’s competitive advantage stems from an integrated multimodal transport system, combining modern ports, an expanded railway network and upgraded highways that function as a cohesive logistics chain.

Speaking in London at the IMO Assembly, the minister outlined recent reforms undertaken in Georgia’s maritime sector. These reforms, she noted, are aimed at enhancing efficiency, regulatory compliance and the overall performance of the country’s maritime institutions in line with global standards.

A significant portion of her remarks focused on improving conditions for Georgian seafarers. The Ministry of Economy reports that certificates issued to Georgian seafarers are now recognized by 74 maritime administrations, including 22 EU member states. Kvrivishvili stressed that Georgia remains committed to strengthening the welfare, training and working standards of its seafarers, ensuring they remain competitive in the global maritime labor market.
