“Construction has commenced on Anaklia Deep Sea Port, a project of historic significance for the country,” declared Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili in Anaklia, where she visited to familiarise herself with the works currently underway on the port site.
In the Minister’s assessment, the process has already entered a considerably active phase.
“Over the preceding period, we held intensive negotiations with the contractor company, and together we optimised the value of the initial contract, reducing the cost of the project by 52 million dollars. The Anaklia Deep Sea Port is a project of strategic importance to our country’s economy. It will be a complex facility encompassing, on the one hand, port infrastructure and, on the other, adjacent infrastructure, including a free industrial zone. As part of the project, an access road and railway line to the port will also be constructed, ensuring the port’s smooth and unobstructed operation. All of this is a guarantee that Anaklia will secure a worthy place not only in Georgia’s port infrastructure, but in that of the entire region,” the Minister of Economy stated.
According to Mariam Kvrivishvili, construction of the access road to the port and an 18-kilometre railway line is set to begin in the near future.
“The Government has already presented a historic ten-year renewal plan for Georgian Railways, in which it was noted that the railway forms part of an integrated transport and logistics system, and that the increased freight flows it will carry require a strong maritime gateway. It is precisely for this reason that the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project is the logical continuation and crowning element of this far-reaching process. The strengthening of the railway and the development of Anaklia are mutually dependent, and together they establish Georgia as a reliable, efficient, and competitive connectivity hub for the entire region,” said Mariam Kvrivishvili.
