Georgia’s Education Minister Givi Mikanadze says the country is launching a comprehensive textbook reform aimed at integrating national values into the education system. The changes will affect both the content and design of schoolbooks, as well as the rules governing their use.

Under the reform, all public and private schools will use the same textbook for the same subject and grade level. Mikanadze said the decision responds to parents’ concerns that students changing schools often faced different teaching materials and methodologies, causing confusion.

The ministry plans to introduce entirely new textbooks for both humanities and STEM subjects across all grade levels by September 15, 2028. Updated books for grades 1, 7, and 10 will be rolled out at the start of the upcoming school year.

The new textbook covers will feature national symbols and cultural themes—for example, a chemistry book will depict the traditional Georgian wine-making process, while a physics textbook will highlight Elguja Medzmariashvili’s contribution to Georgia’s first satellite project. More than 500 new illustrations of Georgian architectural monuments have also been added to help familiarize students with the country’s cultural heritage, the minister said.
