Electricity Imports Dropped to Just 64 Million kWh in April

In April 2026, Georgia imported only 64 million kWh of electricity - one of the lowest monthly figures in recent years. The decline is likely linked to the halt of Russian electricity imports to the occupied Abkhazia region. According to earlier reports in Russian state media, Abkhazia switched entirely to power generated by the Enguri Hydropower Plant starting in April.

On March 31, at midnight, Abkhazia stopped receiving electricity from Russia and fully transitioned to Enguri HPP output. Temur Jinjolia, director of the local utility “Chernomorenergo,” told Russia’s TASS agency that increased water inflow and rising levels in the Enguri reservoir fully covered Abkhazia’s electricity needs.

April’s data shows that total electricity generation in Georgia reached 1.14 billion kWh. Of this, hydropower plants produced 928 million kWh, thermal power plants generated 198 million kWh, wind farms produced 14 million kWh, and solar plants generated 1.7 million kWh.

Overall, Georgia consumed 1.12 billion kWh of electricity in April, meaning domestic generation nearly matched national demand.
