External Merchandise Trade 4.8% Lower Y-O-Y

In January-February 2024 the external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to USD 2 950.1 million, 4.8% lower year-on-year, - according to the preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

As of the document, the exports equaled 803.3 million (12.2 percent lower), while the imports stood at USD 2 146.8 million (1.6 percent lower).

The negative trade balance was USD 1 343.5 million in January-February 2024 and its share in external trade turnover constituted 45.5%.

In January-February 2024 the share of the top ten trading partners by exports in the total exports of Georgia amounted to 80.5 percent. The top partners were Kyrgyzstan (USD 125.6 million), Azerbaijan (USD 99.5 million) and Russia (USD 96.8 million).

In January-February 2024 the share of the top ten trading partners by imports in the total imports of Georgia amounted to 68.8 percent. The top partners were Türkiye (USD 408.2 million), Russia (USD 313.8 million) and China (USD 173.5 million).

In January-February 2024 the share of the top ten trading partners in the total external trade turnover of Georgia amounted to 67.7 percent. The top trading partners were Türkiye (USD 471.9 million), Russia (USD 410.6 million) and China (USD 221.7 million).

In January-February 2024 motor cars claimed the first place in the list of top export items, equaling USD 262.6 million with 32.7 percent of total exports. The exports of wine of fresh grapes totaled USD 47.6 million and their share in the total exports amounted to 5.9 percent. The exports of ferro-alloys occupied the third place standing at USD 42.1 million and constituting 5.2 percent of the total exports.

The top import commodities in January-February 2024 were motor cars, whose imports equaled USD 258.1 million (12.0 percent of the total imports). The petroleum and petroleum oils followed in the list with USD 187.0 million (8.7 percent of imports). The Petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons were third in the top import commodity list with USD 127.1 million (5.9 percent of imports).
