The construction of Anaklia deep-water port is starting. Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze announced the start of construction works on Tuesday. The event was attended by other representatives of the government, including the First Vice Prime Minister.
In his speech, Levan Davitashvili said that a free economic zone will be created on the site.
"The first phase of the project includes 600,000 containers. In the first phase, we will occupy an area of about 85 ha. Finally, after the completion of the 9th phase, we know that the project will be implemented in several stages. We will eventually cover an area of up to 400 ha, and in addition we will have Free Industrial Zone. The project, which includes an additional area of 600 hectares, will host important economic, industrial, and commercial activities, which will certainly be a source of employment for the region," said the vice-prime minister.
The idea of creating a free industrial zone on 600 ha is not new. It was voiced by Dimitri Kumsishvili back in 2015.
"A free industrial zone will be created on 600 hectares behind the port of Anaklia, which will also create additional jobs," said the current Minister of Economy.
