The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia on Tuesday said employees of the Patrol Police and the Customs Department of the Revenue Service had arrested four foreign citizens on charges of illegally crossing the state border of the country with Turkey.
The individuals are also facing allegations of attempted illegal border crossing, organisation of illegal transfer of migrants and use of forged documents, the body added.
It said the investigation had found a Turkish citizen was attempting to illegally transport individuals from the country to Georgia by bypassing the Sarpi border checkpoint using a truck. The police detained all three suspects at the checkpoint.
Another citizen of Turkey was arrested at western Georgia’s Kutaisi International Airport while attempting to leave the country using a fake passport.
The crimes are punishable by eight years of imprisonment.
