Georgia expects construction to begin soon on key sections of the Kakheti highway following the signing of a $372 million financing agreement with the World Bank, Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze said. Of the total funding package, $182 million will be allocated to highway construction in Kakheti, while $190 million will support Georgian Railway projects.

According to Sokhadze, the financing will allow the government to move forward with the Bakurtsikhe–Chalaubani, Chalaubani–Badiauri, and Bakurtsikhe–Telavi road sections. He described the initiative as part of the government’s broader plan to launch a new phase of large-scale transport infrastructure development across the country.

The government is also negotiating additional financing with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), with total planned funding for the Kakheti expressway project expected to reach $336 million. Sokhadze said the project represents one of the most ambitious road infrastructure investments currently under development.

According to the World Bank, the project includes the construction of two four-lane highway sections—Badiauri–Chalaubani (21.7 km) and Chalaubani–Bakurtsikhe (9.1 km)—along the Tbilisi–Bakurtsikhe–Lagodekhi highway corridor. It also предусматриres a new 36.6-kilometer road connecting Gurjaani and Telavi, along with access roads needed to integrate the new highway into existing transport networks and nearby communities.
