Georgia Discusses New Dairy Market Regulation Plan With Producers

დავით სონღულაშვილი

Environment and Agriculture Minister Davit Songulashvili has met with dairy producers to discuss a new plan aimed at supporting raw milk production and strengthening regulation of Georgia’s dairy market. The proposal seeks to improve product transparency, enhance consumer information, and support the development of the domestic dairy sector.

Under the reform, the ministry plans to introduce a voluntary quality label identifying products made entirely from Georgian raw milk. Products containing vegetable fats will be subject to mandatory visual labeling, while retailers will be required to display such products separately from traditional dairy goods. Officials say the measures are intended to help consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.

The plan also includes stricter state oversight of the sector. The National Food Agency will increase inspections across the HoReCa sector, agricultural markets, and distribution chain, while regulations governing product registration and labeling will be reviewed to prevent misuse. The government also intends to promote geographical indications and protected origin designations for traditional Georgian products, including cheese and matsoni.

According to the ministry, representatives of the Milk and Dairy Producers Association support the initiative and have pledged to participate in its implementation. The reform will be introduced gradually to ensure compliance across both organized retail chains and smaller trading outlets.
