Georgia Plans New Labeling Rules and Support Measures for Dairy Sector

სონღულაშვილი

Georgia’s Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Davit Songulashvili, met with livestock industry representatives to discuss planned reforms aimed at strengthening domestic milk production and dairy processing.

According to the ministry, the proposed measures include introducing a special quality mark for products made from Georgian raw milk, mandatory labeling for products containing vegetable fats, and separate placement of such products in retail stores. The government also plans to strengthen oversight and support for traditional Georgian dairy products.

Songulashvili said the new agro co-financing program will offer significant benefits to dairy producers, although access to state funding will depend on compliance with modern production standards. The government aims to increase the production of high-quality Georgian milk and improve the sector’s competitiveness.

Industry representatives welcomed the initiative, noting that rising global cattle prices have made it more difficult to expand dairy farms and increase raw milk output. The Dairy Products Producers Association said the planned support for farm construction and cattle purchases, along with the introduction of a Georgian raw milk quality mark, could help boost local production, create jobs, and reduce reliance on imports.
