Georgia Imports Electricity from Turkey Again in March

ელექტროენერგია

Georgia continued to import electricity from Turkey in March, according to data published by the Georgian State Electrosystem. In March 2026, the country purchased 58 million kWh from Turkey, bringing total imports from this direction to 178 million kWh in the first quarter of the year.

Although Turkey is traditionally Georgia’s main export market for domestically generated electricity, imports from Turkey remain rare and comparatively expensive. Electricity supplied from Turkey typically costs more than imports from other neighboring countries, making these purchases less common.

Russia remained the largest source of imported electricity in March. Georgia received 155 million kWh from Russia, part of which supplies the occupied Abkhazia region. In total, imports from Russia reached 739 million kWh in January–March. Smaller volumes also came from Azerbaijan, around 15 million kWh, while Georgia exported 5 million kWh back to Azerbaijan.

According to Geostat, Georgia spent up to $35.7 million on electricity imports during the first three months of 2026. Of this, almost $13 million was paid for Turkish electricity, $12.9 million for Russian supply, and up to $6 million for electricity from Azerbaijan. Most of the spending occurred in January, when the country paid $22.5 million.

In 2025, Turkey supplied Georgia only in December (40.5 million kWh). The reasons behind Georgia’s increased imports from Turkey this year remain unclear.
