Georgia’s Roads Department has announced a €16 million international tender aimed at improving road safety across major highways, including eastern Georgia, the Tbilisi bypass road, and western Georgia.

The project targets 32 identified high-risk crash locations within a 2-kilometer radius, with 24 sites in eastern Georgia, 4 on the Tbilisi bypass, and 4 in the west. The initiative is part of the second phase of a national road safety improvement program.

Planned works include installation of metal barriers, construction of roundabouts and safety islands, upgraded pedestrian crossings and sidewalks, as well as renewed road signs and horizontal markings. The goal is to reduce both the number and severity of road accidents on major transport routes.

The project is financed through an EU-supported grant administered by the European Investment Bank (EIB). This marks the third attempt to award the contract, following unsuccessful tenders launched in November 2025 and January 2026. Implementation is scheduled to begin in 2026.
