Economy and Sustainable Development Minister Mariam Kvrivishvili says Georgia is launching a “historic renewal” of Georgian Railway that will fundamentally transform the company. Speaking at a presentation, she said the reform is based on a long-term strategy focused on infrastructure development, freight expansion, and modernization of passenger services.
According to the minister, efficiency gains from optimization measures exceeded GEL 230 million over the past year, while net profit increased by up to 30%. Operating profit margins rose from 25% to 36%, mainline capacity increased by 30%, and transit time across the country was reduced by 20%.
The government plans major upgrades, including the purchase of 50 locomotives and 1,500 wagons, backed by over GEL 1 billion in investment. These changes are expected to cut transit time from 24 to 12 hours and double transport capacity. Passenger services will also be expanded with new trains, improving speed and comfort.
Kvrivishvili also linked railway modernization to broader logistics development, including the Anaklia deep-sea port and new connecting infrastructure. She said Georgia is strengthening its role in the Middle Corridor, positioning itself as a stable and competitive transit hub between Asia and Europe.
