Georgia has lost its “Free” internet status and has been reclassified as “Partly Free,” according to Freedom House’s report. The country had maintained its “Free” classification since 2012, for 14 consecutive years.
Georgia scored 68 out of 100 and ranked 11th among 38 countries assessed. Its score fell from 70 in the 2025 report and 77 in 2022, reflecting a gradual decline in internet freedom since 2023.
Freedom House attributed the downgrade to the authorities’ continued suppression of online activism and statements perceived as critical of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Globally, internet freedom has declined for the 16th consecutive year, the report found. The assessment examines online expression, censorship, internet access and digital rights across 38 countries in six regions. Scores of 70–100 indicate “Free,” 40–69 “Partly Free,” and 0–39 “Not Free.”
